I have a document produced in Word 2000. The suffix
is .dot, XP will not open it. Why? What is fix?

jim;

Do you have any version of MS Word installed??

*.dot files are Microsoft Word Templates

Isn't the file extension .doc, not .dot? You have to have Word installed on
your computer to read the file. Word, Excel, PP, etc have never been
included in XP or any other Windows version.

A .dot file is a document template file. Word should open it just fine. But
the question is, do you have Word, or a comparable program on your computer.
Windows XP is just the operating systems and doesn't include Word as part of
the OS.

A .dot is a document template. You need to have Word installed on your XP
machine if you want to open it.

*.dot* is a *Word* template, and as such it is *Read only*

Not Read only on my machine.
Normal.dot isn't even read only.
None of my *.dot files are read only.

Not Read only on mine either when i checkedr ...apologies :o)!

however,,,they are definitely *Word* templates!
You shouldn't need to open them unless you wish to change them.
