A client has a computer with XP Home installed. Someone installed XP Pro
over the top, it was not a legal copy. Now, she cannot use her computer,
because the OS did not pass the Genuine Software Test. Can I do a repair
using the XP Home CD, so the hard drive does not have to formatted?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Your client will need to re-install WinXP Home. There is no need to
format the drive; however, he/she would be wise to back up all
important information beforehand. But then the OP should do this
at regular intervals (e.g. weekly) regardless . . .

It is going to be hard to backup the data because the computer can't be
used.

Indeed, but there are several methods to achieve this. I'm
happy to explain them if the OP needs to know more.
