A Windows client/server network requires a Windows NT Server, Windows
2000 Server, or Windows Server 2003 computer to act as a domain
controller. Windows XP is a client operating system, not a server
operating system, and neither version of Windows XP can act as a
domain controller. If you have only Windows 95/98/Me/XP computers on
your network, peer-to-peer is the only possibility.

Windows XP Professional can log onto a client/server network, but
Windows XP Home Edition can't.

Hello Steve

Thanks for the reply. I am getting sever for 2000. I have one pc with 2000 pro dual booted with 98se. From what you are saying is if I do setup a network with a sever(2000). I will not be able to log on to it with XP Home on those two pcs. So I guess I have to switch to pro to make it work correctly. If I have it wrong let me know. Thanks

Are you getting Windows 2000 Professional or Windows 2000 Server, SR?

For a client/server network, you need Windows 2000 Server. Windows
2000 Professional is a client operating system, just like Windows XP.
