XP Home on University Campus - No Internet?

A friend of mine brought me their laptop to fix. Ran the
system backup cds on the laptop and everything seemed to
work fine. Connected to WinUPdate throght my cable modem
and got all updates possible. Works fine. It's been about
two weeks since then and school has started. When my
friend tries to use their laptop on the network at the
university, they cannot reach the internet.

I have xp pro and can use it on the network at the
university with no problems. (I don't connect to the
school domain or anything, just boot up and it
automatically boots to the desktop). I have this set up
with their laptop, where they turn it on and it doesn't
ask for a password, goes traight to the desktop.

I know xp home doesn't like networks larger than 10 pcs,
nor does it like networks with domains (if i'm wrong,
please let me know). However, could the Home edition be
the problem of not letting my friend get on the network at
the university? I've had it at my house and it goes online
no problem. The university does not allow a logon to a
domain in order to access internet, just boot up, plug in
network cable, and you online w/ DHCP.

Any ideas?
Thanx.

Most campus networks are not domain structures (for the students...for
administration and things like that, they probably are domains), but rather
large workgroups. Sometimes there is a workgroup for each floor, or for each
dormitory building. Make sure that he is joining the correct workgroup, and
that he is being assigned an IP address and that his subnet is correct.
Also, make sure that his NIC is properly seated and functional. I know you
said it worked on your home connection, but maybe the transport from your
house to the dormitory unseated the card. Check that.

Good luck,

I'd have your friend contact the University's computer people for
help. They're the ones who know their network best.

One small point: Windows XP doesn't have a limit to the number of
computers on a network. XP Home Edition allows a maximum of 5 other
computers to connect to its shared resources simultaneously.
Professional allows a maximum of 10 other computers to connect to its
shared resources simultaneously. Computers that aren't actively
connected to a computer's shared resources don't count against the
limit. When a computer disconnects from a shared resource, it no
longer counts against the limit. See this site for more information:
