A friend of mine want to have two hard drives both
with xp home installed.
Will the xp home activation system require a new liscence?

The End user Licence Agreement (EULA) allow you to install one copy of the
software on your pc. So this means that you have purchased a copy of XP with
a product code. Now you can install this on your 'one' machine. If you have
two hard drives and you want to have a copy of windows XP on both drives you
need to buy 'two' copies of Windows XP (volume licences start at 5. Below
that you need to buy individual copies)

I have xp installed on several drives, the same licensed version. I use
removable drive trays and can slide either one in and it works just fine.

What difference does removable drives make?

You're ready to run if one drive crashes - hardware or software.
You can secure your data - say, one drive for private files.
Portability.
