I have a new notebook computer running XP Home. I'm
connecting to a network at work with a total of three
computers. When i go to "My Network Places" the XP Home
machine recognizes that the windows 2000 machine is
connected to the network. When I double click on it to
access the shared files I get this message:

\\staff is not accessible. You might not have permission
to use this network resource. Contact the administrator
of this server to find out if you have access
permissions. The network path was not found.

I've done a lot of searching and tried a few things but
nothing works so far.

Any help would be great.

Check if the Win2k machine has permission for network logon for the user.

Start->Run-> gpedit.msc

Go to Local Computer->Windows Settings -> Local Policies -> User Rights
Attributes (something like that, mine is in portuguese)
check the values for access this computer from the network.

just be careful when using the policy editor.

Hope this helps.

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/network_protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)

My original message below still applies. Tried the three
suggestions and no luck.

The only other thing i could say is that the xp home
machine cannot access the xp pro machine either. It is
able to see the computer in "My Network Places", but I
get the same message. Both the XP Pro machine and the XP
Home machine are connected to the same network and setup
the same way, but the XP Home machine can't access any
other machines and no other machine can access the XP
Home machine.
