So how do you do that? On my network the laptop can see the workgroup
but nothing else. Strange thing is that it was working fine until I
installed MS office and then some of old shared files till work, but I
cannot establish any new ones. The mesage below is what I get also.
That message encompasses a lot of errors in networking, unfortunately, from
the equivalent to "Your network isn't working any longer" to "You forgot to
share this with others".
Installing MS Office, so far as I am aware, wouldn't do this but then again
it may have. So, check your permissions and resources all over again.
Basically, if you want to share C drive at the root, you have to go to the
machine where that sharing is to occur from other machines on the network,
right click on C drive and choosing Sharing and Security and allow it to be
shared.
Unfortunately you haven't mentioned if your users on the network all share
the one common logon name or whatever but if they don't, the groups that
have been set up may all have been wiped out. You may SIMPLY be able to get
around all this just by activating the GUEST account on the computer where
the resources are to be shared but it DOES mean that it is able to be shared
by all, then, to a much larger degree.
Did someone with networking knowledge above your own set this up? Without
knowing the individual sharing and secrecy needs of your setup, I would urge
you get that person to look at it again. You have to set up different areas
of access to different groups if security is an issue and if it is, this
isn't something you sound happy to tackle by yourself. It isn't that it is
that hard, though so when you get the person in, watch them. You'll pick it
up as they do it.
