XP Home Internet/TCP/IP horrible throughput

W2686 eMachines with XP Home fully updated per win update.

Throughput slows to a drag frequently such that a simple web page can
take 10min to load.
I'm pretty well convinced its not the ISP because I never have the
same experience when I switch the phone line plug to my micron pc
running win ME.

Watching the modem and IE lights it is almost as if the XP machine is
telling the source/host to slow down as light activity is
intermittent.

I found that NETBIOS had been enabled by factory and disabled that
which improved the situation somewhat, but it is still intolerable.

Is there a way to tell whther this is a software problem or a modem
problem without replacing the modem? I don't have another XP
compatible modem.

Thanks,
jonathan

chk the network protocol on the machine and take out ipx if you have it and leave it as tcp/i
if u do not have ipx then i could be the modem install the one from the other pc
and chk for updates if it is not compatible with xp most companies have put out drivers that will work with xp

Do you find this condition when you access any websites or just a particular
one?

Also, what other applications are running (look in the system tray).
Sometimes Antivirus protection, spam filter and firewall software all impact
web browsing. Some software is notorious for impacting the Windows user
experience.

Please advise us of what apps are running.

Paul.

Thanks for your reply. The apps in the system tray are the smart link modem,
the dialup connection monitor, windows messenger- not signed in, norton
antivirus, safely remove hardware, and volume. I have the XP firewall
running as when I initially got the machine I immediately found it sending
megabyte upon megabyte to somewhere without my instruction. (I reinstalled
the software using the recovery cd's and installed the firewall.)

The problem does not occur with any particular website. My kids and I view
many different sites each day. It does seem to occur more frequently when we
are running Outlook Express and Internet Explorer. When the problem occurs
the throughput slows to a crawl (a web page could take 10 minutes to
appear), then sometimes terminates completely. By this I mean, you can close
IE and OE, just reopen IE, and select a single site. The only light that
will appear on the dial-up connection monitor is the first (left) one. IE
will eventually report that the page is unavailable (any page you select is
unavailable.) If I close IE and open OE the dialup monitor will show
activity only on the left light and will report no response from the mail
server or the newsserver depending on which I selected. Sometimes
terminating the connection and redialing will correct the failure, but more
often than not a warm reboot is required.

thanks again,
jonathan

I made the trip and bought a new modem. Problem solved. New machine with a
half bad modem. Never woulda thunk it.
