Was reinstalling XP home edition. Had already installed XP home and all the
drivers. Had installed Zoealarm (standard) and Norton Systemworks (2004
profesional edition). After installing GO Back ran into problem where
"Saving your settings..." screen hangs. Computer will not even power off.
My secondary (disk 1) SATA drive I know is a problem, but while it is hooked
up I am not using it. Anyone have any ideas?? Definitly do not want to
pulled the plug, unless it is the SATA plug.
Thanks

You are having profile unload problems if you experience slow logoff (with
Saving your settings for most of the time while logging off).

If you see a lot of Userenv/1517, Userenv/1524 or Userenv/1500 errors in the
Event Viewer, download and install the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service.

This decreased my shutdown time a bunch. Takes any where from 10 to 20
seconds to shutdown.

Hi Wesley, I downloaded this a couple of days ago as my shutdown has been
slow for a long time ("User Profile Hive Cleanup Service") and I'm happy to
report that and it's working well. My shutdown has improved 100%. It now
shuts down reasonably quick.

I only had one error it related to but it's working and I thought I would
pass this on.

Interesting. Will download and try after checking. Thanks. Bob

Hi Kaylene,

You sound like an ad on roller derby. <LOL>

I hated the idea of another service running, but I'm sold on Uphclean.

Glad to hear your shutdown has sped up.

I tend to get a little excited when things work as advertised but I must
admit I was impressed by this little utility.

It only needs to run once? Doesn't it? Or am I misunderstanding
something here? If it sets itself up as an automatic service then just
use the Services Management Console and turn it off... I used it a few
times and although I can't remember I thought it was a "run once"
service? I know it's run once to do the job, but I thought it didn't
restart again unless reinvoked?

I am impressed too, Kaylene. :-)

The User Profile Hive Cleanup service does *no* good if it is not running.
It has to be running in order to take action to allow profiles to unload.
If UPHClean cannot unload profiles then shutdown takes longer, if you have a
problem with user profiles not unloading.

Running it once does nothing except maybe speed up shutdown one time.

[[The concept of UPHClean is to deal with these the same way the operating
system deals with other resource issues: when a task is done resources
(memory, handles, etc) are automatically reclaimed. UPHClean accomplishes
this simply by monitoring for users to log off and verifying that unused
resources are reclaimed. If they are not it reclaims the resource and logs
its action. ]]
