XP Home Failed: Separate Start up Disk?

My XP Home system failed after giving a "repair disk"
instruction. The repair got hung up (I left it on 12
hours), but after a hard reboot I can't even get the
system to run. I have my reinstall disks, but I don't
want to lose the data on my "D" or "C" drive which is
says it will wipe for a reinstall. Then diagnose and
recover the files. My computer is on a LAN and if I can
get it to function with network sharing, I'm hoping I can
just copy files to another of my computers before doing a
full reinstall. Is there anyway to launch the computer
off a "system CD" or "System removable Drive (like a 128
MB Memory Stick) Then use some recovery program to
recover the files? If the hard drive itself is bad, can
someone recommend a recovery service?
Thanks, Frank C

Hi,

In order to access it on the lan, some sort of OS must be running on the
system. Otherwise, there is nothing for the lan to access. I would remove
the hard drive and slave it in another system, then copy off the desired
data files before attempting any more recovery work.
