I am experiencing a problem very similar to one posted in this forum by
anthraxen 11 June 2006:

“Windows keeps hanging up on start up after loading personal settings it
shows
my wallpaper then hangs. I have no taskbar or desktop icons. I can call up
the task manager and log off and can even run applications from the run
screen but no matter how many times I reboot I still don't get the taskbar or
desktop icons. Help!â€

And also sillyme 11 December 2006:

“I have the same problem and more.â€

In my case I have tried navigating to explorer.exe using task manager and
running it but I get the message:

“Windows cannnot find C:\Windows\explorer.exe. Make sure you typed the name
correctly and try againâ€

I have tried copying explorer.exe from a good computer and repeating the
procedure, to no avail. I have run chkdsk /r on the hard drive, and found no
major problems. I have run Sophos from the command line using a batch file
(which included downloading the latest virus definitions) started with task
manager and found no viruses. And I have run a repair install of XP Home
SP2, but the problem has not gone away.

Besides doing a clean install of Windows, does anyone have any helpful
suggestions?

Hi Jonno,
I think this is the answer you are looking for. It has saved me several
times when fixing clients computer after malware infestation. They think I
am God when everything comes back up after a reboot. The first time I did
this I was sceptical but had nothing to lose as I had gone through all the

re-installs. This is simply magic.

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Thanks for your comments, but I could not find the registry key
detailed on the pages linked above.

Thanks Touch Base for your simple and elegant solution. I have been fiddling
around for days on this one, and your solution took just a couple of minutes.

I have marked your post as useful and I have bookmarked your blog.

Thanks also to all the other replies, but I recommend Touch base's blog to
you as well. To Gerry, the create a new user doesn't work on this one, and
my history was lost when I tried the repair install, but thanks for your time
anyway.

Thanks for the feedback.

I am pleased that you had a positive result. By the way it's not my Blog,
full credit goes to the pctechnow
