My PC will not boot.
It starts up and the screen fills with text about
problems with programmes in general. It offers 4 ways of
starting, Safe, Safe with prompt etc. I have tried all of
the options with the same result. The system starts to
boot then the hard drive powers down to leave just the
vdu info, as if it had been switched off.

Can anyone help please.

Regards

Give some info about your machine and any recent driver/OS updates you might
have made.

I've got the exact same problem. It was working last night, I didn't make any OS or driver changes, and then I went to boot it up this morning and it started doing this. I tried the option to go back to the last safe point, the screen goes black and a progress bar suggests that something is happening, the machine tries to load Windows after a little while and then goes back to saying it can't start up.

This is a fresh complete install that was done two days ago because the upgrade install over '98 was stalling, presumably due to a conflict with an existing program. Should I try to boot up from the install CD?

If the foundation is shaky, it would be foolish to build anything on it.
Since your newly installed WinXP is only 2 days old, I strongly advice you
to start over.

Do a Clean Install of WinXP.
