XP Home Edition vs. XP Media Center Edition

I am in the process of buying a new computer. I have one picked out with P4,
3.0 GHz, 1 GB, 250 GB, and a CD/DVD RW. My question is...the main function
of this computer will be to create family reunion and anniversary DVD movies
to burn and share with family. I want to integrate digital video and digital
pictures along with some graphics and music. Will the Home Edition do the
trick? It comes with the specific refurbished computer I am looking at and
at a cost I can afford.

With the right third part software - any OS will do.
 
give linux a try, buy linspire or xandros
or download suse10 for free from opensuse.org you will not lose
anything in any case :)

As mentioned, any computer you buy should have the right 3rd party
software to use what it has - if it comes with a CD/DVD read & write,
then it should also come with the software needed to use both the CD
and DVD..

You'll probably want to use DVD-R or DVD+R discs to if you plan on
making for others because these are write-to one time only blanks and
are much cheaper than the RW (read/write) discs because RW is writable
many times.

There are now double layered DVD drives that come with the newer
computers.

I don't know what you are paying for this used computer, but AMD makes
good systems (Athlon Processor) that compare to the Intel Pentium 4
well and are relatively cheaper in price. But be aware you cannot
compare GHz speed when deciding whats fast enough between an AMD
processor and an Intel processor, as the AMD line is slower if you
just look at the GHz speed - however overall something like an AMD 2.2
GHz 3200+ Athlon compares to maybe a 3.0 GHz Pentium 4. And if you
plan on keeping your computer and not upgrading for say 5 years, the
Athlons that are sold nowadays are all 64 bit, so whenever the new
Windows 64 bit takes hold you'll have the capability to take advantage
of the 64 bit part of it.. (32 bit will still run but slower).
