I had to use a restore disk that came with my emachines pc cuz I'd messed it
up so bad. Problem is the boot.ini always says ...XP professional edition,
when I have home edition. Also, in experimenting with the services mmc and
component services mmc, I've gotten fatally lost. The restore cd didn't set
the services back to original factory...as advertised. I don't know which
services to put in "NTlocal services", "NT network services", or "local
system services. Since I have a broadband ISP, I'm automatically set up for
LAN. Hep me plz!
If you want to change the boot.ini to say Windows XP Home Edition, you can.
System Properties> Advanced> Startup and Recovery> Settings: System
startup> Edit. A notepad window will open. Look for the operating system's
name enclosed with quote marks. Change the name of the operating system
within these quotes. Change nothing else. Then close the window. Say yes to
save the changes.
Not sure how to help you with the services. I've never seen a post here
before where someone changed logon states for the services. The description
portion of the following article says that following the directions
contained in the document will restore default services as well as
restoring the default security settings. There is a caveat at the beginning
of the article too that you should take note of:

For your reference:
The only "network services" I have on my system are: ASP.NET State Service,
Distributed Transaction Coordinator, DNS Client, Performance Logs and
Alerts, Remote Procedure Call, Remote Procedure Call Locator, Windows Media
Connect (WMC). All of these show NT Authority\Network Service as the logon
identity.
Local services: Alerter, Application Layer Gateway Service, Remote
Registry, Smart Card, SSDP Discovery Service, TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper,
Uninterruptible Power Supply, Universal Plug and Play Device Host,
WebClient, Windows User Mode Driver Framework. Logon: NT Authority\Local
Service
All others are Local System logons.
You may have some, all or other services on your system since these can
vary depending on the system configuration.
