I ahve on system that puts the /etc/hosts file in the winnt directory instead
of the windows directory. Why is this? I have tow exact systems but one has
the files under the windows directory and one has them under the winnt
directory.

Winnt was used for previous NT operating systems, NT4, 2000 etc. If you
upgraded from one of those then it would continue to use the winnt
directory. Also poorly written software could create a directory called
winnt and put it's stuff in there, rather than looking up the proper
location of the Windows directory.

It depends on whether you have an OEM machine. Gateways still use Winnt.
It isn't any big deal as long as everything works.

The system was not upgraded. The system is a Gateway. I got an Ipod and I
could not access Itunes because it was looking for the hosts file in the
windows directory and it was in the winnt directory. Even though I have XP, I
had to change the properties of the software to think I was using windows
2000 for me to connect. It took me a while to figure out why it was not
connecting. I was jsut curious why the install would put the files in that
directory. My other systems running XP have a winnt directory but its empty.
