In an attempt to correct an extremely slow to respond Dell Inspiron, I tried
to use the reinstallation disk that came with the unit. Woud not work
because a newer version (service pack-2 maybe?) had been installed. I have
another reisntallation disk for another computer, I attempted to use it. I
loaded, to a point, with the exeption of a few files, but it will not
activate. So now I sit with a "dead" computer. Is there a way I can recover
this unit to the original state, at least?

Check the manual and/or contact Dell for your reinstall options.
You probably only need to boot with the correct CD in the drive.
Back-up all important data before you begin.
