Our Sony Vaio computer came with Windows XP home edition
already installed - we weren't given a disk. I'd like to
use the backup utility, but Microsoft's online
information indicated it had to be manually downloaded
from the disk. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Thats right, from the tools on the xp cd.
However microsoft techs will tell you to use the file transfer wizard,
open the wizard, start, accessories, locate the wizard, set current computer as old,
set to save data in a folder that you create, once its thru, transfer files to a cd and
use as backup. It wont save xp os files, but saves all settings to the os,and all youre
files, all you really need if a crash occurs is reload xp,the cd,and windows update.

If I don't have the xp os files, and I don't have XP on
CD, how could I reload it if it crashes? Thanks for your
help. Julie

Julie:
Download ntbackup.msi from
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/software/ntbackup.msi
Double-click to start installation. When complete, you will find a shortcut
to the backup utility in All Programs>Accessories>System Tools. You may want
to copy this shortcut to your desktop. Be aware that this utility does not
back up to optical drives, e.g. CD-RW. To work around this, backup to a
folder on your hard drive and burn that to CD.
