When I purchased my computer from Dell a system disc was not provided.
Therefore I can not install the XP backup software, (this is not the Restore
software). When I attempt to locate the backup software at Microsoft I am
directed to "How to Install from the system disc". Can I download the
software from the net?

Hi Svend36,

Contact Dell. They MUST provide you with a system disk. It is part of thier
OEM licencing requirements. You should also have a MS hologram on the
outside of your computers case that will have your license no. You should
quote this to Dell.

Regards.

Svend36,
When you purchased your Dell was there a hidden restore partition on the
Hard drive? Since you said that you did not receive any CD's to reinstall
the OS.
1. Some models had a partition that would create a Reinstallation/Restore CD
for you.
2. Some models had a partition that would reinstall your OS and programs as
they were when it left the factory.

If these options were used on your PC, then Dell met their licensing
requirement. If you deleted these partitions, when alternating the original
partitions of the hard drive, installing a larger HDD, or replacing a
defective HDD. then your only option may be to purchase a retail copy of the
OS, and use the COA that comes with it.

You need to contact Dell and see if they will send you a replacement CD for
your model. You should also ask them for any CD's for drivers or third party
programs that were originally installed on your PC. There is no guarantee
that they will send them, or even have them. But it can't hurt to ask.

Yes, you can download it from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...e2-8b69-4c65-afa3-2a53107d54a7&DisplayLang=en

If the link above doesn't work for you, copy/paste the whole thing into your
browser window instead of clicking it.

I don't know about Dell, but some vendors do NOT provide backup with XP Home
and that's quite legal for them to do. That's a problem with OEM
preinstalled software; there are ways to leave out peripheral software like
backup and a few others.
That said however, they DO have to provide some method of returning the
computer to its shipped state. If there are no CDs, that's usually in a
hidden partition on the hard drive which will be initiated from a non-hidden
app somewhere on the drive. Check documentation for how to restore the
system.

IMO The BEST backup method so far is to use imaging software at a cost of
about $40 to $50 from Symantec or Acronis. Those can also compress files as
it processes them.
