XP Home doesn't allow System Restore

Is there a simple reason why XP Home won't let me restore my system using a
previous restore point. It goes through the motions then I get a window
saying "XP was unable to restore my system and nothing has been
changed"....not in those exact words but close.

I've used System Restore in the past without problems so obviously something
is keeping me from using the System Restore feature.

Any ideas would be very helpful.

Thanks,

Hi BEK,

Unfortunately, once SR "goes bad", all you can really do to correct it is to
disable the service, reboot and reenable it. This causes the loss of all
existing restore points. Start/run services.msc and double-click the service
to proceed.

Why, by the way, were you trying to use SR? Perhaps there is a different way
to fix the problem.

Hi Nutcase (love the name!)

The reason I was trying to restore, and I don't know if this would even have
worked, was because:

I have a two computer home network. Last night I was messing around with My
Network Places and somehow got the files in one of the computers listings
all bolluxed up. I thought maybe if I restored from a time before my
screw-up my Network Places would be back to their previous correct listings.

Maybe you could tell me how to put My Network Places back?

At any rate, thanks for your help!

I have had a similar problem. Somehow System Restore had
lost track of a file (it should have been in the Recycle
Bin but was not) and refused to restore to a point before
a particular date.

Have a look in your System Log (using Event Viewer) -you
may see an error msg there from System Restore

An expert from Microsoft suggested that I run the System
Restore diagnostics tool -
%windir%\system32\restore\srdiag.exe to troubleshoot
further.

Srdiag takes several minutes to run and uses lots of CPU.
It creates a .cab file, which it places in the \%windir%
\system32\restore folder by default. You can double-click
the file or right-click it and choose Extract. You can
then examine the 14 extracted files to troubleshoot your
problem.

In my case the fix needed was to recreate the missing
file, store it in the right folder, all using the XP
Recovery Console. I decided to live with the problem.

I would create them again (I would guess there aren't too
many).

Se the Winodws Help on your PC
"My Network Places displays shortcuts to shared
computers, printers, and other resources on the network.
The shortcuts are created automatically in My Network
Places whenever you open a shared network resource, such
as a printer or shared folder.

The My Network Places folder also contains hyperlinks to
tasks and locations on your computer. These links can
help you view your network connections, add shortcuts to
network places, and view computers in your network domain
or in your workgroup.

Click the Add a network place task to start the Add
Network Place Wizard. This wizard helps you to create new
shortcuts to shared folders and resources on your
network, Web, and FTP servers. If you don't have folders
on a Web server already, the Add Network Place Wizard
will help you create a new folder for storing your files
online.

You can view, manage, move, copy, save, and rename the
files and folders you have stored on a Web server just as
you would files and folders stored on your computer. When
you view the contents of a folder that is stored on the
Web, the folder's Internet address is displayed in the
Address bar."
+++++++++++
BTW, when all is OK. create a System Restore point and
make sure it will restore to that point

Hi,

I guess the question would be: What could you do before that you cannot do
now?
