I was expanding the size of my hard drive's primary partition while deleting
the extended partition using Partition Commander 8. While the program
was`working, the power went out and now the system does not boot. I get an
error message:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll

I tried booting from the floppy and the CD, both work but do not allow me to
get to the C drive. Is there an approach that would allow me to fix this
problem without destroying the data on this drive???

Your help is appreciated.

Sid

you should be able to replace the file from your startup
disc,replace it and try again.

When you say that you can't get to the C drive, do you mean that you can't
access data off the drive, or do you mean the computer doesn't see the drive
at all or????

Try running a repair from the XP CD first ... it will then try to find the windows installed files and repair the bootup files needed
