I am running a home network with the main computer running xp home with all
the latest updates, a bedroom computer with xp home and all the latest
updates, a laptop with xp pro and a laptop with win98.
As of a few days ago all was working fine when a problem occurred with the
bedroom computer and so i decided to reformat and do a clean install. All
was fine and xp home was activated with no problems.
The next stage was to access windows update and this is where the problem
started. Each attempt to access update returned a dns error and subsequently
any attempt to access a Microsoft web site failed in the same way.(not a bad
thing some may say).
I thought it may have been a network issue so i connected each of the 2
laptops in turn and found no problems in accessing any web site on the same
connection.
So basically i have a computer with a freshly installed copy of xp home that
has successfully been activated however can not access Microsoft sites to
enable update.
It is fully functional and able to access the rest of the web.

Hi John,

Have you checked the HOSTS file under C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc? Open
it in notepad, and if Microsoft's sites are referenced here remove them.

HI john,
Other than renaming the hosts files or deleting them if you still cannot
access the windows update site
Rename the following folder "WUTemp" under the C drive
Catroot2 folder under c:\windows\system32
After this restart the computer and then try the Windows Update
If you still cannot access the websites then follow the troubleshooting
steps in the following article from the link

If you still face issues please mail back to (e-mail address removed)
