xp home cd rw drive /dvd drive wont open

Does anyone have any ideas as to why the cd rw drive and
dvd drive cannot open a cd /dvd but can see them in the
properties tab but wont play them either is this xp
error. If uninstall them in device manager and reboot
sometimes they work normal on re boot ? then they fail
again

hey i am having the same problem and it is making me mad

i want to burn a cd and cant do it it is so fustrating
need help NOW
 
I'd suspect either the IDE channel your drive is on is
operating at the wrong speed/mode, or the CD/DVD drive
doesn't like whatever IDE device driver you have got
installed.

Check that the IDE channel its on is set to 'auto'
(through device manager and in the BIOS), and if its still
not working try installing the Mobo manufacturers own
drivers (or if you're already using them, do a 'driver
rollback' on the IDE driver).
