needhelp

I have a Laptop running XP home. I am trying to get it to
work on the network at work. I can get online and
everything seems to work ok, except that when I try to
browse the network I can't. Other PCs in the workgroup
can see the laptop, but can't access it because it
is 'unavailable'. When I try to browse the workgroup from
the laptop I get a message that I don't have permission
from the server. I have never had an issue when adding
PCs to the workgroup.
Any ideas what is wrong, please help.

The computer might not be part of the domain. You will
have to log on as Admin and add your PC to the domain.

For example: on Windows 2000, right click on my computer,
go to Network Identification Tab, you will see two buttons
there one to rename your pc and join a domain, or just
join a domain. Hope this helps.

I thought of that but there is no domain. Just working
in a workgroup environment. All other machines are a part
of a workgroup, not a domain. I was also under the
impression that only XP PRO can log onto a domain.

I had encountered a similar problem with an xphome laptop.
I had a home network and an office network both with
ipaddress ranges the same ie 192.168.1.0 network on both.
when i switched from home to work the machine would not
network properly because it received a DNS specific
address. try going to a command prompt type
ipconfig /release hit enter then ipconfig /renew if this
solbes your problem you can write a batch file to preform
these steps after you log on

when I try this, I get a response that operation failed
because there is no adapter in the state that is
permissible for this operation

Do you have a static ip configured? If you do set tcpip to
obtain ip adress automatically

.
there is no DHCP server on the network. I did a
release/renew and then manually added an IP address for
the network, still not working.
