We have a small peer-peer XP network. 3 XP-pro, 1 XP-home PCs, all
connected via a D-Link ADSL modem router. One of the XP-Pro's is
acting as a file server.

The XP-Home PC often cannot access shared drives on the server PC (red
cross on Icon). Sometimes clicking 'repair' sorts the problem out but
more often than not it doesn't. Restarting the machine does not fix
the problem either.

However, internet access, ping and other network tasks are fine (even
remote assistance), it's just Windows file sharing and printing that
keeps getting stuffed. Am I right in thinking this is a NetBIOS
problem? If so, what's the fix?

Have you enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP in the WINS tab? Also, does the Home machine have the proper permissions to access the Pro machine. Just checking "Everyone" is not a good practice but adding individuals and/or groups is a preferred way.
