I have a laptop running xp home, and a desktop running xp
pro, on a home network (both machines connected to a wired
dsl 4 port router).

Both can see each other's shared folders

The xp pro machine can access/transfer files to the xp
home machine

The xp home machine can see the shared folders but CANNOT
open them or transfer files (not accessible....might not
have permissions. Access Denied)

I have a printer connected to the desktop (xp pro) and the
laptop (xp home) can print to it no problem

I have turned Simple File Sharing OFF on the xp pro desktop

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Matthew,

If Simple File Sharing is off, then did you setup and use a common
account / password on both computers?

Check Local Security Policy (Control Panel - Administrative Tools).
Under Local Policies - Security Options, look at "Network access:
Sharing and security model for local accounts" - is it set to Classic
or Guest Only? Better security is Classic, with the Guest account
disabled.

Now check Sharing And Security for the folders in question. Look
under the Permissions button (which is for network shares) - not the
Security tab (which is for locally accessed resources).

If you're using Classic network access, ensure that Everyone (or the
specific account) has Change as well as Read access checked. If
you're using Guest network access, ensure that Everyone (or Guest) has
Change as well as Read access checked.

Cheers,
Chuck

I have the EXACT same situation as Matthew. When I try to acces a shared folder on the xp pro machine, I get the following message "\\COMPUTER\FOLDER is not available. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Not enough server storage available to process this command.

I havespent hours looking on this user group and web sites trying to find a solution. Have tried many changes on the xp pro machine with no luck

Any help would be much appreciated

The "not enough server storage" message is a special case, with a
specific solution, Rusty.

The problem is probably that an antivirus program has changed an
obscure TCP/IP setting. Please see this Microsoft Knowledge Base
article for the solution, specifying a value of 15 for IRPStackSize on
the "server" computer:
