My computer appears to boot up XP Home correctly, but when I try to log on, the message "loading your personal settings..." appears, and stays there for quite a while (longer than normal), then a completely blank desktop appears, devoid of icons or taskbar. Neither button on the mouse does anything, and pressing the Windows key has no effect, although pressing it with L brings back the logon screen. No other combination works. Logging on as another user makes no difference

(I tried booting from the Win XP CD as suggested, choosing the Repair option... this just left me abandoned with the C: prompt!

What has happened, and how do I recover

Abandoned with the C: prompt!? You have taken the wrong turning. For
repair install of WinXP, you should not press the first Repair that appears,
that is for Recovery Console. Take the second R.

Bee.
