XP Home Application Hang

Occasionally I have an application hang, and cannot kill it using the
Task Manager. A shutdown hangs also. The only way out is a hard
reboot.

This has happened with IE6, Opera (thought an alternative browser
might work better), and Accuterm (a terminal emulator). The only
common thread is that all programs were accessing the Internet at the
time. Usually the session gets going ok, but early on everything just
freezes, and it's game over... Other applications will run ok, but a
second instance of the same app will fail.

I searched the MS site and the NGs, and found huge amounts of stuff on
hangs, but nothing that seemed to address my case. Any help would be
welcome.
TIA

Have you recently added any new hardware or updated any existing
hardware with new drivers, new firmware or new patches? Have you
added a new video card or added a new mouse? Did this problem just
start without any connection to recent events?

Look forward to your followup post.

As to drivers and hardware: nothing at all recent. I got an external CD
writer about a year and a half ago, if that counts. Otherwise, I have only
installed the critical updates. I tend not to mess with hardware as long as
it is working ok.

No, I can't correlate the beginning of this problem with another event. I
didn't notice the problem in the beginning, but I have been noticing it for
maybe a year now. Lately it has become really annoying, hence this post.
Sorry I can't provide any more info; if I had more of a clue, I might have
been able to figure it out myself. Thanks for any help.
