user has xp pro laptop that is set up to connect to office
lan using a static ip address. user wants to connect to
his cable internet at home with his laptop. is there a
way to maintain two separate network configurations that
both use the same nic connection?

John XP has a feature to assist with this very situation, Alternate
Configuration

To use the Alternate Configuration feature:
On the Start menu, click Control Panel.
Click Network and Internet Connections.
Click Network Connections.
Right-click the local area network (LAN) or high-speed Internet connection
that you want to configure and click Properties.
Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties.
Click the Alternate Configuration tab.
