I currently purchased a new computer with WinXP Home and i
wanna use it in the office to copy and transfer files. But
there seems to be a problem with the networking. I
followed all the sets on the XP home operationg system for
setting up a network. I cannot see other computers on the
network even though i enabled file sharing. On the other
computers with Win98 O/S , they can see the computer on
the network but when i doulble click on the computer it
displays an error message saying it cannot access the
computer stating that the "computer or sharename could not
be found, make sure you typed it correctly and try again".
I don't know how to fix that problem cos i followed all
the procedures but still it cannot work. also would it be
a problem with the file system, like they are bnot
compatible cos the new computer with XP Home is using NTFS
whereas Win98 is using FAT. Would this also affect the
networking and the transfer and sharing of files.
Please, i really need some expert help here!!.
would be very grateful for ya help..

regards,
John.

.... is not accessible

Message: "....is not accessible. You may not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if
you have access permissions. Network path was not found."

Resolutions:
1) make sure no any firewall running.
2) make sure you have created the same workgroup, and the same username on
w2k/xp for logging on a remote computer.
3) check user's rights.
4) you may want to enable guest account on w2k/xp.
5) if you are using simple file sharing, you may try to disable it and
re-share the drive manually.
6) if it is mixed OS (win98, NT, ME and W2K/XP) network, enable NetBIOS over
TCP/IP.
7) make sure the Computer Browser service is started if all computers are
w2k/xp.
8) stop Computer Browser service on win9x, ME and NT if this is a mixed OS
network.
9) cache credential by using net use \\computername\share /user:username
command (it is better to have the username logon shared computer).
10) if you have tried enabling netbios over tcp/ip but doesn't work, you may
try to load netbeui (loading netbeui may slow your network).
11) Make sure the server service is running.
12) If you can see the share in Network Neighborhood but not access it, this
issue may be resolved by verifying that both the share permissions and the
NTFS partition permissions are correctly configured for individual user or
group access.

XP and 98 are fully compatible for networking. NTFS vs. FAT makes no
difference: each computer can read its own disk and send the contents
to the other computer over the network.

Something else is causing the problem. These tips should help:

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/ic_firewall.htm

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/network_protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)
