Within the last few months I baught a computer with a version of XP home.... Single Disk and Install Booklet no Retail box. said on it "For distribution only with a new PC
My question is
Can I use my older programs with XP home.....
I have things like Space bunnys from outer spac
and Horrd
and MYTH The Total Code
Games that are Disigned for a Win 32 Computer that will not have more then64 to 256MB and 120Mhz Processor
will older games work on XP Home Or will I have Useless junk cluttering up my CD holders.....
also XP Home seems to be Touchy about some Internal Processes sometimes it Can crash for no apparent reason or Slow down to a dead Crawl.......
is there a Geek tool you can get that will customise XP home for your powersupply 650 Watt AMD2600+ MMX Ram1.45GB DDR 333Mhz/ nvidiaGeforce 64 DDR 333Mhz 440 mmx and/ Gigabyte KT400
I Just want to know how I can get max out of this system for games and applications without buying new Hardware Or do I need a Bigger Powersupply now that I am running XP home versis 98SE
I had this hardware running on 98SE befor I baught XP home.....

Justin, most of the "older" games will run perfectly well on Windows XP.
Some need to use Compatibility Mode (details are in Help and Support), and
this TechNet article will help you:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/lgcyapps.mspx
Basically, what Compatibility Mode does is allow the older program to
"think" it is being installed on the operating system for which it was
designed. I've even run the "made for Windows 3.1" Myst on my system. You
need to pay attention to the game's requirements, and some need to be
installed using Compatibility starting with the installation itself.

As for the system adjustments, you really don't need fancy hardware, etc.
The key to Windows XP is running sufficient RAM.

Let Windows XP managed your settings, which should already be giving you
optimal performance. You can check this in Control Panel/System/Advanced
tab/Performance section. You can look what is set by clicking on the
Settings button and then the Advanced tab. Default for Processing
scheduling and Memory usage by default is Programs.

As for Compatibility Mode, you need to read the information in Help and
Support and the TechNet article I gave you the link for in the previous
response. The drivers for hardware are something you would need to track
down via the web site for that particular manufacturer. Microsoft does not
write drivers for third-party hardware.
