1. Workgroup File Sharing
2. cathy is an administrator in the XP Pro machine
3. cathy is an administrator in the XP home machine

XP Pro machine:
4. ntfs permissions on a shared folder "cathy_folder" has cathy as
owner
5. ntfs permissions gives cathy full control of cathy_folder
6. file sharing gives full control permissions to cathy

Conclusion:
From the XP Home machine, cathy can read but *cannot* write to the
shared folder cathy_folder.

Don't understand this convoluted permission stuff.

Let me add that actually I also added Everyone to have full access in
Security (ntfs permissions) at the root of the drive. I figure that is
why she is at least able to have read access to the shared folder. I
have a hunch that if I removed Everyone in this case, she would just get
"access denied" to the folder that is fully shared to her and for which
she has full security rights and for which she is the owner. Is this
how far the limitation on XP home is? If the XP Pro machine isn't doing
simple file sharing then it won't work at all? What a load of crap!

What ended up working was giving full rights at the share level and
controlling access at the ntfs level. Not sure why. Spacey

I just went through the same problem and I finally got my XP home to talk to my XP pro, first I set the computer connected directly to the internet (XP home) as a host in the network set up wizard, then I enabled simple file sharing in the XP pro machine in the tools/folder options/view (In explorer) and wallaa.
I also ran the network wizard last out of control panel in internet connection and made sure that we all had the same work group.
