When I put XP into hibernation it apparently saves all my active files which
are reloaded when it's restarted.
Is it possible to persuade XP to save these files to a CD so that I can
restart it with different files and settings depending on the original
hibernation files

No and this defeats the purpose of Hibernation. Hibernation is designed to
save a snapshot of the system precisely as you left it, returning you to the
exact same spot as when you shutdown to Hibernation.

If you wish it to open on different files and settings you need to create
that snapshot before shutdown.
