XP Not Staying On

Hi

I have a problem with my laptop.

I cannot load the computer. Everthing starts ok, goes through the password screen etc and starts to load the descktop. At that point a lot of error boxes come up, with the option to send the error report to Mircrosoft. Shortly after that the computer comes up with a blue screen saything an illegal operation hs aken place and then I have to restart.

I did hve a virus problem last week which I thought I had sorted,maybe not.

I have just done a Hijackthis report, would anybody be able to have a look and see if they can spot anything. I have run Spybot and Spydoctor and they can see nothing.

On the report I can see windows\system32\smss.exe, which I have looked up and it does say this could be a virus but I cannot find it to deleate it, can anybody confirm this is a virus.

I can only presume there is something messing with the start up program.

I would suggest getting a second opinion from one of the on-line antivirus scanners such as, KAV and or HouseCall.

Hi

Further to my post yesterday and my problems, I have done as advised and run the CC Cleaner and downloaded the AVG spy report. As requested I have attached these reports. To lso try to help I have downloaded a trial vervison of registry Repair 2.1 and that did a run on the registry and came up with a lot of problems which it repaired. I am aware these things may pull up things to make it look worse than it is but thought it may help.

If it gives a clue to my problem, I found last night that I cannot get either the main system or back up to work at home, but on connecting it at work, through an ethernet cable I can get it to work in Safte Mode.

I as also concerned that the Windows Back Up was switched off and would no swit off but have now realised that my Acer Laptop has it's own Back Up system, so I may be able to recover something from there but I don't know how to go about this.

Since using the Registry Repair, I have not tried to restart in normal mode, but I will do this next.

I do not know what it is, so I went and had a look to see if I could find some information ... the first two sites I looked at were blocked from loading by my security. I am very suspicious of double dot file extensions, I would get rid of it.

I can see no other "problems" in your Log.

Did you try any of the online antivirus scanners ?

Thanks for responding.

I did the two online virus checks that were recomended but they only came back warning about minor cookies.

To be honest, I'm now at a loss what to do next.

The Laptop is only a couple of months old and I have no idea how the problem started.

I assume as I have done lots of virus checks, removed all the rubbish etc, something has damaged the registry that is causing the computer to crash.

I don't know if it's a clue to the problem but at home it not not start in safe mode but will try and start normally and then a deep blue screen comes on saying there has been a problem and starts the loop of starting again.

At work, the same thing happens in normal mode, but if I connect it to the system it will work in safe mode, very odd.

So, I now have a problem. It's an Acer Laptop and it seems it does it's own backup, which switches off the Windows back up. Is there anyway of doing a restore, I know I would loose everything but I cannot see a choice.

I have read somewhere there is a way to start again and it's well hidden inside the computer. Does anybody know how this is done. Has anybody experiance of recovery of an Acer computer as a second option, where do I start.

If not, is it possible to but an XP back up disc to get it running.

I am waiting for a VIsta upgrade, maybe I should wait for that but I need this for ongoing coursework.

Has anybody any advice?

OK, I think you need to turn off the "automatic reboot" so we can actually see the error when it happens. It may tell us enough about itself to let us troubleshoot further.


To disable automatic rebooting ...

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties
2. Click the Advanced tab
3. Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and Recovery dialog box
4. Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary number of times
5. Restart your computer for the settings to take effect

Now when a fatal error occurs, you'll at least see it and it won't cause an automatic reboot. You/we still have to sort out what's causing the problem, so post any error message in full here. :thumb:

I did as you said, and the blue error screen stayed on and it read,

It means nothing to me, but I'm sure it must mean something, hopefully something that can be sorted.

STOP: 0x000000f4 ... is predominantly associated with a hard drive problem ... so, can you give the full specs of your PC/Laptop as much information as possible.

As you can use Safe Mode, that leads me to think you have a driver corruption somewhere. Still need more info ...

There is nothing else with the error message except three stars.


It's an Acer 2492 WLCi Travelmate, but market 2490 on the screen

It has a Celeron M processor 420

It has a Graphocs Media Accelerator 950

60 GB HDD

256MB DDR2 but I added another 256 from PC World, correct spec and ran ok up to these problems

It does say at the start of the main screen that a process or thread critical to system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminated.

The laptop is only a couple of months old.

OK ... well, this LT being only a few months old, and as I suspect a HD problem, I could be wrong, I would suggest contacting the shop from where you purchased it to the view of repairing.


We have a problem here with that, Acer ain't the best company to deal with, the first thing they will tell you is to reinstall the operating system ... I don't know what "recovery" CD you may have, but most will not save your data. :(

Trying the easier method of reinstalling the OS, called a dirty install, using a "real" XP CD may be an option, if you can borrow one ... this will not loose your data.

One thing you could try, if confident enough, is to re-seat the HDs ribbon cable and or replace it. Be aware, you may be invalidating your warranty.
