The startup process takes 3 minutes. Is this normal? Can I shorten it?

It takes 2:20 from turn-on to music and another 40 seconds for stuff like
anti-virus and firewall to be activated. IE and OE are not set to, and do
not activate, during this period.

My computer is a new HP 201e, AMD 2GHz, 256 ram, 30 Gb harddrive.

Thanks

New computers often have a whole raft of "rubbish "' software programmed to
start up on boot up. They are put there by advertisers and the like. Open
msconfig and disable obvious programs of this kind.
XP will usually take abiut 1 min 40 secs with a reasonable set of things in
start up

Thanks, Eric, for your benchmark of 1:40. Yes, there is a lot of undesired
software on the computer, including a notorious Weatherbug that either
doesn't work, or the web site it connects to doesn't work.

Unfortunately for me, I've already disabled some stuff via msconfig and
still have the three minute start time. I'll dive back in and see what else
I can do.

Thanks
