We tried installing SP2, the install failed and we followed the instructions
on the roll back. Now when I try to start the PC it hangs at loading
windows, when i try to boot in safe mode it hangs at a blank screen with safe
mode in the corners. In both cases I have let it sit at both for 24 hours
hoping the roll back of the failed install will complete. F1 F1 F1 F1 F1 F1

When you tried to install SP2, what Service Pack level was your
installation of XP?

Which instructions did you follow when you attemped to "roll back"?
Please post a link to them.

What's with all the F1s?

F1 = HELP

It was a message box that said install failed click ok reboot............

Windows XP PRO SP1A

Once more, which instructions did you follow when you attemped to "roll
back" to SP1? Please post a link to them.

For future reference, don't bother installing SP2. It's an extra
unneeded step (since you already have SP1a). Instead, install SP3, which
already includes SP2.

Next time when hitting F8 at bootup, instead of selecting Safe Mode, try
Last Known Good Configuration. If that doesn't work, try the method
outlined here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545
"How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from
starting"

You will need an installation CD more than likely to use the Recovery
Console.

If you still have SP2, remove it via Add or Remove Programs in Control
Panel.

Once you have undone the damage and you are ready to install *SP3* the
*proper* way, post back and we will offer you all the necessary tips for
a successful installation.

Daave sorry but thats all the specifics I have as far as what I was prompted
to do I will attempt your suggestions when I am infront of the pc tonight.

Thanks!!!!
Chris

1. Why did you wait over 4 years before installing SP2?

2. Run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting your HijackThis
log to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in
conjunction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on
its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

HOW TO get WinXP SP1(a) fully patched:

1. Download & save the installer for WinXP SP3 to your desktop:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5b33b5a8-5e76-401f-be08-1e1555d4f3d4

[Yes, you can skip WinXP SP2 altogether.]

2. Read & heed:

3. Logged in as Administrator, if necessary, double-click on the saved file
to install WinXP SP3. Follow all prompts; be patient, and reboot twice when
the install completes.

4. Do Resolution Method 2 here (trust me):

5. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com | Install any required software
then click on CONTINUE | Select CUSTOM and scan | Install any critical

[I do NOT recommend installing IE7 via Windows Update.]

6. Make certain that Automatic Updates is enabled; cf.
