I have XP and have only had a few minor glitches in the past year. recently,
numerous things that it shouldn't. The "Restore" function won't work either.
I don't believe any virus situation is present as Norton runs the same time
each day and I log into theri site to get any new virus names to add to the
program.

QUESTION: can I install the original XP disk the computer came with, boot
with it and will it locate anything corrupt & possibly repair the nasty
problem. If possible be easy on me please, I'm no computer expert. Thank You

Ray;

The answer is not an easy one. If you have installed SP2, then running a
restore form a non SP2 disc will be a little problematic in itself. It
would be better to "slipstream" your WindowsXP disc (provided it a retail
disc and not an OEM supplied disc). "Slipstreaming" is a method of updating
the files on the original disc with SP2, and creating a new installation
disc. It is perfectly legal and legitimate to do so. Here is a page with a
nice little utility called "Autostreamer" that will explain how to do it
step by step.

Note: You will have to download the network install version of SP2 for this
to work. It is a 266 MB download Here is the link for that:

Once you have created the new disc. you can either boot from the disc and
initiate a REPAIR installation, or insert the disc, exit out when it starts
up, and then go Start > Run > "SFC /scannow" (without the quotes). This
will invoke the system file checker and will replace any damaged or invalid
system files. Please note that after doing either of these choices, you
should run Windows Update.
