Hi all,

Zone Alarm Pro tells me that Generic Host Process for Win 32 Services is
"listening to ports TCP 5000 and UDP 1900". This is constantly going on
every few seconds.

Does this represent any security problem? What's it listening for?

I've got most stuff blocked, but it seems it is necessary to enable this
module (svchost.exe) with both access and server rights to make my internet
connection work.

I guess I should be able to block this module from accessing these two
ports, but I don't know how that will affect my connection or if it's really
necessary. Which ports does it need to operate?

I would also be interested in knowing if any info is being sent out without
my knowledge...

Thanks,

I'm guessing, but I think no.
I would check with zone alarm and see if their software
uses those ports in some way..

Those ports are used by Universal Plug and Play. You can block them if you
don't care about UPnP.

Hi Ken,

Thanks for the info. Can someone enlighten me as to what UPnP is, does, and
what the possible benefits are?

Thanks,
