I'm new to XP from Windows 98. I'm used to having to defrag frequently
(always running in safe mode), and use scandisk. What, if anything, do I need
to look for and do along these lines with XP? Thanks.

XP (being built on NT technology) doesn't need de-fragging half as much as
the W9x versions. You only need to do it once a month at most, and then only
if your activity has been heavy.

Use the analyze feature of the Disk defragmenter to decide whether it needs to be defragmented, or if your usage is pretty heavy and the drive gets fragmented fast, you can set some automatic tool that will do the job whenever needed. Else simply defrag whenever u add or delete a lot of files or large files/ install updates/programs etc.

Hello, I have WindowsXP Home SP2.
No scandisk has chkdisk."error checking" and defrag.
One way to access: go to "local disc", "C Drive" rt. click, open
"properties" click "tool" tab.
Should have "error checking" if clicked on will ask you to run after reboot,
click yes,
upon next reboot program will run.
"Defragment Now" tab will offer the ability to analyze drive and inform you
if drive is in need of "defraging".
Take Care.

WinXP does not have a program called "Scandisk," as this was a
Win9x/Me program. Instead, because WinXP is descended from the WinNT/2K
OS family, it has a command line utility called "Chkdsk," which performs
much better.

Start > Run > Cmd > Chkdsk.exe /? for the correct syntax and
available options.

Alternatively, double-click My Computer > right-click the desired
hard drive > Properties > Tools > Error-checking/Check Now. This will
run Chkdsk, normally on the next reboot.

However, unless you are actually experiencing a specific problem
related to your hard drive's file system, there's no real need to run
Chkdsk. The utility is not designed to be used as part of any period
maintenance plan.

Thanks for the info. In win98 I always had to run defrag in Safe mode; should
I just run it from Windows now?
