I am trying to build a gaming machine and I have not been able to install Windows XP Home Edition. My mouse is not recongized when the system boots. I have tried a USB mouse and a PS/2 mouse. The system freezes at different points through the install. Right now it is frozen at the "24 minutes left" point of the install where it states that it is coping files

Do I need to update the BIOS on this motherboard

Is there something that I am overlooking

My system consist of the following

motherboard - ECS L4VXA
CPU - Intel Celeron 2.4Gh
flopp
hard drive - Seagate Barracuda ATA I
CDROM - BTC CD-RW/DVD-RO
Memory - 512Mb 400Mh
Keyboard - Logitech PS/
Mouse - Logitech USB optica
Video card - VisionTek 9600 256MB AG
Power supply - 350

....or make sure you have not overclocket your RAM in the BIOS (try reducing
the memory speed there)

Had a similar problem, it was the motherboard or CPU.
If i remember right it turned out to be the CPU, sent it back and got
a new one, windows would install fine after that.

Almost certainly it's the motherboard (or a motherboard/graphics card
conflict).

I have the same motherboard and have been reading about a somewhat related
fix (the system randomly freezing up), and I've been reading topics on this
problem. More than one person has had XP freeze up when trying to install
with this motherboard.

Not sure if there's a fix, but your best bet is to upgrade the BIOS to the
most recent 1.1e. Make sure you read the instructions exactly - this is
one thing you don't want to mess up on!

I used WinFlash through Windows 2000 and it worked perfectly. Though you
can also make a bootable disk and use the DOS-based Award flash utility.

Be sure to find out what version BIOS you have (press Pause/Break button on
startup memory test to see the version number).

For L4VXA2 [V1.0A]:

For L4VXA2 [V1.0C]:

Good luck! Let us know if you fixed it.

P.S. - Flashing the BIOS with the newest version 1.1e solved my periodic
freezing problem. It's been working now for several days without crashing!
This is the way it ought to be! :)
