XP Freezes on connection

I have Windows XP Pro running on a newly built computer (AMD2200XP). All was
running superbly until I set up my LAN connection. I have an offline
file/printer server connected via my LAN card and a modem connecting me to
the internet connected to my XP machine. The LAN I/P addressing is fixed to
very specific addresses - 192.168.40.10-4 and with masks of 255.255.255.255
for each. The DNS/Wins etc is all set to 192.168.40.10 (the server).

When I connect to either or both, XP frequently freezes immediately for 2 -
10 minutes. The taskbar/start button lock. Titlebars and their buttons
become sluggish. Mouse control becomes negligable. Task Manager won't
appear.

The system stores up button pushes and clicks etc for a long time. The clock
stops. Suddenly it all updates in a flurry. It never used to do this until
the networking was installed. I've tried various things but NOTHING seems to
work. Suspicion fell on the Outpost firewall and after removing it,
everything ran well. Now it's gone bananas again.

What's the solution or do I need to specify more what the problem is? Is
there even a solution (other than tossing Windows in the bin and buying a
Mac, which I regret now not having done)?

Because the subnet mask only allows for one machine (the host machine). As
Both the machine, the printer, etc believe they are on their own, they
cannot communicate. Make life easy on yourself and use 255.255.255.0.

Hmm. The LAN server is set to 255.255.255.255 for each I/P address. That
works just fine with two or even 3 PCs connected.

The XP box is set to 255.255.255.0

Erm... you are saying you can have three pcs (maybe four if you are
including the server in your claim) using the subnet mask of
255.255.255.255? For four machines the subnet mask would be 255.255.255.252.
The way you say it, the server has more than one IP address... does it? If
so, it will not work in the range you specify with the same subnet mask.
Perhaps you should post an ipconfig /all for all the machines/devices on
your network.

The problem is not the network but the XP box.

When I'm not connected to the LAN but am connected via the modem to the
Internet, the XP PC often hangs for a long period (2 - 10 mins).

When I connect to the server (running SME server 5.6) as the sole
connection, the XP PC often hangs for a long period (2 - 10 mins).

When I connect to both simulteneously, the same happens.

When I connect Chronos and Aphrodite (running Win98 and Win NT4
respectively) to Zeus (the server), I have no problems whatsoever.

The problem is entirely an XP invention. The IP addressing is set up
identically (although Chronos is set as .13 and Aphrodite as .12 and
Apollo - XP box as .11)

It seems almost as though XP is too feeble to accept simulteneous dialup and
LAN.

I had a small hang as Zeus came online but usually the hang is MUCH bigger -
several minutes.

So your OP was incorrect! Your IP range is 192.168.40.10-14 with a subnet 0f
255.255.255.0, but your dial up has the subnet of 255.255.255.255. Basically
that was misleading.
Please describe your entire network: including all nodes attached... the
subnets you at first stated appear to be irrelevant as one is for dial up
and the other for your LAN. What is the tunnel adaptor you are using? Is it
PPTP? You do not say. What protocols are running on a: the server; b: the
clients? The more information you supply the easier this will be to solve.

What program or file does this work (hpcmpmgr.exe) my computer has not

You would be better served by posting this as a new question, as most people
will ignore it unless they are actively following the thread you have
replied to (which will be the minority). To do so hit the 'new' button in
the top right hand corner of the window with the questions in.

Ok. The server runs SME Server software (Linux based).

Currently the network is as follows
SME server with a LAN card connected via a CAT5 crossover cable to the XP
Pc. This is a part-time connection only.
For the moment, we'll ignore the NT4 and Win 98 machines. Let's just get XP
working first.

These are the settings on the server:

Do you have anything that coinsides with the system pause in the Windows
event log?
Is the XP installation up-to-date? (I.e., has all updates from
windowsupdate.com including NIC/modem drivers).
Is ICF enabled on the LAN connection?
Do you use a software firewall on the XP machine? Which one? Does the pause
still occcur if you disable it?
Does the pause still occur if you disable any anti-virus software
(especially any automatic checking for updates) on the XP machine?
Does the pause still occur if you disable firewall AND anti-virus software?
Sorry to ask a bunch more questions...

XP Installation is up to date. All updates installed
Everything is installed except for universal plug and play (which I
uninstalled recently)
ICF is enabled on the dial-up but not on the LAN
No firewall installed. I used to have Outpost but immediately on
uninstalling Outpost, the freezes stopped but they've returned. The clock
stopped sliding off the side of the screen as soon as Outpost was
eliminated.
Antivirus - AVG. Not tried deactivating it yet. Since so many people use
(uptodate) AVG, I feel the problem may lie elsewhere.
I believe the DCOM problem correlates to the freezes.

The only reference for event ID 10010 I can find is:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;327153 .
I have to admit I don't know a solution to the system pauses if the DCOM
events are causing the pauses.
You can find out what DCOM does here: http://www.grc.com/dcom/ .
If the MS article does not help (I suspect it will not), I suggest starting
a new thread stating what you now know from the even log and the symptoms.
