XP Freezes during restart

My XP laptop freezes whenever I restart it from hibernation. I always have
to shut it down by removing the battery and then I have to select the
'delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu' option for the
operating system to load. And everytime this happens, i always notice a new
folder (empty) on my desktop

Please help.
