xp freeze up during startup

had to formal hard drive and then installed windows xp upgrade. Computer freezes up several times during startup and then drops internet connection during use (wireless connection). Is the startup system missing something that the upgrade didn't have when the operating system was reinstalled with xp upgrade ?
 
Rich, I would start over. During the Install of WinXP just have the
basics. cpu, ram, video card. Everything else remove.
