Greetings-
My PC running xp was running perfect until I decided to install a
modem for faxing purpose. I still kick myself for trying to install an
old driver and now I can not even uninstall the device from my harware
even though I have removed the modem card and go into hardware and
click uninstall. The "gost" of the device is there in the software
that interfaces with modem normally. To top it all shortly after, my
pc keeps freezing. I am not sure if the two issue are related. I
also got an error message from my virus software about a worm. So
whatever suggestions you have I would greatly appreciate.

You could use Start>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore to load a
previous working version of your system. If you plug into different PCI slot
it will be detected as new device. As far as drivers go, I have found that
you should never run the CD that comes with the modem. Who knows what it
will install. It is better to navigate to CD while installing drivers "From
Location". Usually the default generic drivers Windows Plug and Play picks
are the best although I did have a US Robotics modem that would not work
with Generic Modem and required driver from manufacturer. Run Memtest86 to
insure problems are not from RAM. Looks at CPU, video card and PS fans to
ensure spinning and free from dust build up.

Memtest86? Isn't that a linux tool? Is there a windows version?

My issue has changed somewhat now. I used the XP cd to repair the
missing file ( one of the system files was missing ) and now although
my copy of XP is very genuin, I get a prompt saying that I have to
register again, which is not an issue except I am running into a
chicken and egg situation. I need to log into Windows to install the
Ethernet driver ( it is a GigE and xp does not have it ) but I can not
log in before I register online! What to do?

Mentest86 does not use any operating system. It is a boot CD or floppy. If
you have corrupted file it could be due to RAM errors.

Do you have some old NIC you could install? You can register by phone.
