can somebody please tell me how to change the welcoming and ending flash
screens? i doubt it should be that hard to do but i can't find any info
explaining how to do it. thank you

Not as easy as it was in previous versions (dropping renamed bitmaps into a
directory). The XP files that contain these images are executable files
and, since they're system files, are protected by Windows File Protection.

There are third party tools available to edit the files directly and addon
customizing programs to change the screens. Can't make any recommendations
though. While I don't hesitate to run Windows Blinds for customizing the
Windows environment (after logon), I'm apprehensive about programs that
alter files that are involved in the log on/log off process.

Boot screens - how to install:

Be absolutely sure they are the correct file or your
system may not boot! Be sure they are for the same SP
also.
I agree with Sharon F about being apprehensive about
programs that alter files that are involved in the log
on/log off process. I've had one that had to be replaced
through dos (luckily I remembered some commands)because
windows wouldn't boot.
I now use what comes with XP!

i don't know how to change the splash screen,
but if you want to get rid of it entirely and view the boot messages
just edit boot.ini and put one more switch ... add /sos after the
/fastdetect switch

ie:
/fastdetect /sos

be sure to leave a space...and *don't* do it if you feel unconfortable
modifying critical system
files

thank you for the`quick`answers. i would like to get the toshiba logo from
the start screen. i can live with the windows startup, but the gaudy toshiba
addon is a bit much, imho.

The Toshiba splash screen is turned on or off in the BIOS. It appears
during the POST and is not part of Windows.

That might be easier to get rid of. If it appears right after you power up
and before all the "starting Windows" stuff, check your BIOS setup screens
for a way to turn the OEM splash logo off. I've seen these screens
described in various phrases in BIOS. Sometimes not apparent but instead of
the OEM screen, you get to watch the POST results.
