XP Fix by reinstalling?

Can I fix (tweak) XP by reinstalling it on top of itself? I updated
Symantec AV by deleting 8.0 and reinstalling 8.1 and the whole system
gets those annoying Installer popups running 20+ times before shutting
off. Can I fix this by reinstalling XP? I don't want to back up
everything on 25 CD's :-(
