The XP firewall seems to be good, but I can't figure out
how/where to fool with settings for it. Anybody know? I
also want to be able to read the logs for the firewall.
It seems to be equal to Zone Alarm, Sygate and Norton and
the several other firewalls I've used; I tested it at the
Norton Security site, and it tests out with exactly the
same results, but I want to be able to "fool" with it:
it's my nature...

All of the user configurable settings are on the Advanced tab of the
properties of the network connection connectoid, under the settings button
for Internet Connection Firewall.
The advanced tab also has a link for you to "learn more about" ICF, so you
do not "fool" with it.

There is a tool here to read the XP firewall logs:
http://www.mjleaver.com/Software/software.htm
There are no configurable settings that I know of...
pfirewall.log is the log file,
To view the security log file:
Open Network Connections
Click the connection for which Internet Connection Firewall is enabled, and
then, under Network Tasks, click Change settings of this connection.
On the Advanced tab, click Settings
On the Security Logging tab, under Log file options, under Name, click
Browse.
Scroll to pfirewall.log, right-click pfirewall.log, and then click Open.
Double-click the log file to open it, and view the contents.

the in built xp firewall is on a par with most third party
firewalls BUT only against incomming intrusions
it does not monitor or check outgoing connections
with the same degree of security

do not think for a minute that it is equal to ZA etc
because it isnt.

Good. Thank you. That's what I needed to know. I will
not trust ICF entirely. I came to the conclusion I did by
going to Norton's security testing site where I got the
same results with ICF as with Sygate, ZA and Norton
firewalls. But I also need protection from worms and
keyloggers, don't I...

Thanks again!
