I understand that XP has a built in firewall. Where do I find it and
how do I enable it?

Thanks,
Bill

Right-click on your connection, choose Properties and go to the Advanced
tab. Top Option.

To enable or disable Internet Connection Firewall

1.. Open Network Connections
2.. Click the Dial-up, LAN or High-Speed Internet connection that you want
to protect, and then, under Network Tasks, click Change settings of this
connection.
3.. On the Advanced tab, under Internet Connection Firewall, select one of
the following:
a.. To enable Internet Connection Firewall (ICF), select the Protect my
computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from
the Internet check box.
b.. To disable Internet Connection Firewall, clear the Protect my
computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from
the Internet check box.

Think mine was a bit easier to follow than that :-)

the built in firewall is very basic.

In that it only blocks INCOMING traffic and not outgoing talk-to-base
spyware.
Zone Alarm is free but takes
more to setup.

Not really, if you are a standalone machine - just accept the defaults.

Ever think of using the Windows help feature? Most questions can be
answered there.

Gordon;
His was copied and pasted right out of XP Help. I have done the same thing
myself. It's quicker than typing. :-)
