can you please tell me how i can switch off my Xp
firewall? I cant find this anywhere

Control Pane-->Network Connections-->Double Click on your
connection-->Advanced tab.

You should find the checkbox there.

Make sure another firewall is installed prior to doing this, though.
 
Are you sure it is ON. Presently the XP firewall is off by
default.

But open network connections and look at the
properties/advanced tab.

To enable/disable the built-in firewall, Start > Network
Connections > Right-click the connection > Properties > Advanced >
Protect my computer.....
