I want to install Norton Personal Firewall, but prior to
installation, intructions tell me to disable the XP
firewall. Supposedly, it can be enabled again after
installation. When following instructions to disable XP
firewall, I run into a roadblock. I can never get to the
advanced tab that I need to get to to uncheck
the "Protect my computer or network" box. Any ideas?

I'm having similar problem trying to turn on XP firewall
for my AOL dial-up connection. I've followed MS's
instructions to right clicking on "properties". I get no
further screen that contains the "advanced" tab. If I try
same for the LAN, which I am not connected to, I get the
properties screen and can turn on firewall there, but I
don't think that protects my dial-up. BTW, I don't know
that it matters, but the dial-up connecton shows
disconnected even if I'm on-line.

XP firewall does not work with AOL, although I've now seen a few
messages that state that the two will work together, IF you are using
AOL 8. I have no way of testing any of this, or, rather, I could but
will NOT install AOL to find out.

I've been struggling for hours now trying to also install
the firewall on my Windows XP and have experienced the
same obstacle following a click on "properties."
How frustrating to realize that AOL is not compatible
with XP! And this information we were supposed to learn
was. . . where??
Good luck all.

This is from Microsoft's website
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=826955):

<<Note Some dial-up connections may not appear in the
Network Connection folders. For example, AOL and MSN dial-
up connections may not appear. In some cases, you can use
the following steps to turn on ICF for a connection that
does not appear in the Network Connection folder. If
these steps do not work, contact your Internet Service
Provider (ISP) for information about how to firewall your
Internet connection.
Start Internet Explorer.
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
Click the Connections tab, click the dial-up connection
that you use to connect to the Internet, and then click
Settings.
In the Dial-up settings area, click Properties.
Click the Advanced tab, and then click to select the
Protect my computer or network by limiting or preventing
access to this computer from the Internet check box.

Firewall in Windows XP

Note ICF is only available on Windows XP, Windows Server

Enterprise Edition. Basic Firewall is a component of
Routing and Remote Access that you can enable for any
public interface on a computer that is running both
Routing and Remote Access and a member of the Windows
Server 2003 family.>>

AOL came installed on my computer over 1 year ago. When
my subscription ran out, I switched to MSN. When I got
to Network Connections, AOL, MSN and a LAN connection
were there. I had not deleted AOL from my computer, I
was just not using it. I have since deleted everything I
could find concerning AOL, but I still get same result.

I've been having the same problems trying to turn on the
Windows XP firewall with AOL 8.0. At least I finally know
now that it's not because I was doing something wrong!
Microsoft, PLEASE put something on the online instructions
you provide that the XP firewall is not compatible with
AOL--I've wasted a lot of time on this.

Can any of the MVPs tell me what I should do now?
