Hi,

I have an old 98 PC with a stack load of files that I could realy do with
moving to my nice and shiny new XP box, but my 98 box does not have a
network card, CD burner or other mass data transfer medium. What options do
I have? I'm considering trying an old version of LapLink (using DOS) I had
many years ago and using a serial cable, but if XP and 98 have an inbuilt
way of doing this i'd be glad to hear about it.

I don't currently have a USB to USB cable but I could get one if it was of
any use. The only other option is to get a network card and hope it's
supported by 98 and my existing hardware.

Here's hoping!

Do an Advanced Search at Google.com with "Direct Cable Connection".
There's loads of stuff on the web for doing that. Even with a network card,
though, you'll need a special "crossover" cable.

Another way might be to put your Win98 hard disk drive into your
WinXP computer (and jumper it as Slave if your WinXP HDD will
be on the same IDE channel), and just drag-'n-drop entire folders
from one HD to the other. I do that between WinXP HDDs, although
I've not tried it between Win98 and WinXP HDDs.

I find that the easiest way to transfer files is with an USB Flash
drive. The price of these little wonders has dropped considerably. A
128MB drive is now around the $100 mark. Even the 64MB drive that I have
is quite useful. Do a google search of "USB Drive"...there are dozens of
suppliers.
